What to do next
How it works
Pick your PNG files, choose a quality and click Convert. Several files are converted one after another, and you can save them one by one or as a ZIP. The result card compares the original and AVIF sizes.
Transparent backgrounds are kept. For screenshots with a lot of text and lines, choose High for crisper edges.
Things to know
Every current browser opens AVIF, but older Windows Photos and some forum and store admin pages still do not. Check that the destination accepts AVIF, and keep the original if you are not sure.
Encoding happens on your device, so bigger photos take longer. Resize photos over 40 megapixels before converting.
Frequently asked questions
Is the transparent background kept?
Yes. AVIF supports transparency, so the transparent areas of the PNG stay transparent. The result card shows a note confirming it.
The AVIF file will not open.
Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari (iOS 16 and later) and the current Windows Photos app open AVIF. Older Windows Photos and Paint, some forum and store admin pages, and older image editors may not open it or may refuse the upload. For those, JPG or WebP is the safe choice.
Why does it take so long?
AVIF compresses very well, but encoding takes a lot of computation. This tool does not send photos to a server. It encodes on your device, so one photo can take anywhere from a few seconds to over a minute depending on the hardware. For many or large photos a desktop computer is faster, and a phone may stop if the screen turns off.
Do my photos get uploaded to a server?
No. The first run downloads the AVIF encoder module (about 3.5MB), and after that decoding and encoding happen inside this browser. Results disappear when you close the page, so use the save button to download them.
