    What to do next

    How it works

Upload photos, pick black and white, sepia or high-contrast, then click Convert. Several photos can get the same effect in one go.

Black and white is not a plain average. It uses the eye's sensitivity to each channel (30 percent red, 59 percent green, 11 percent blue), so the light and dark areas of the original come through naturally.

    Things to know

A photo saved in black and white cannot be turned back into color. Keep the original.

High-contrast can flatten very bright and very dark areas into pure white or black. For portraits, plain black and white usually looks more natural.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between black and white, sepia and high-contrast?

Black and white builds gray from how bright each color looks to the eye, weighting red, green and blue differently. Sepia adds a brown tint like an old print. High-contrast pushes bright areas brighter and dark areas darker for a stronger look.

    Does the file get smaller?

Often a little, but not much, because JPG already stores little color information. To shrink the file, run it through Compress image as well.

Does it work with transparent PNGs?

Yes. Save as PNG and transparent areas stay transparent. Save as JPG and they become white.

Do my files get uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs inside this browser and your files never leave your device. Results disappear when you close the page, so use the save button to download them.
