  • The NFL counts a tie as half a win and half a loss. MLB and NBA games cannot end in a tie, so the two rules give the same answer there.

What to do next

How it works

Winning percentage is wins divided by games. With the NFL rule, each tie adds half a win and still counts as a game played. Baseball writes it with three decimals and no leading zero, like .625.

Batting average is hits divided by at-bats. On-base percentage adds walks and hit by pitch to the top, and walks, hit by pitch and sacrifice flies to the bottom. ERA is earned runs times 9 divided by innings pitched.

Things to keep in mind

The NHL ranks teams by points, not winning percentage, and many youth leagues use their own tiebreak rules. Check your league rules before using these numbers for seeding.

For innings pitched, enter the box score number. The calculator turns .1 and .2 into thirds for you.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate winning percentage?

Divide wins by games played. A 10-6 team wins 10 รท 16, which is .625.

How do ties count in the NFL?

The NFL counts a tie as half a win and half a loss. A 10-6-1 team is (10 + 0.5) รท 17, which is .618.

How are games back calculated?

Add the leader's extra wins to your extra losses and divide by 2. A 88-74 team behind a 92-70 leader is ((92 - 88) + (74 - 70)) รท 2 = 4 games back.

What does 6.1 innings mean in ERA?

Each out is a third of an inning, so 6.1 is 6 1/3 innings and 6.2 is 6 2/3. 18 earned runs in 62.1 innings is an ERA of 2.60.
