What to do next

How it works

Pick the question you are asking and enter two numbers. X% of Y is X รท 100 ร— Y. "X is what percent of Y" is X รท Y ร— 100. Percent change is the difference divided by the starting value.

For shopping, the sale price is the original price times (1 - discount), and the original price is the sale price divided by (1 - discount).

Things to keep in mind

Percent change depends on which number you start from. A move from 50 to 65 is +30%, but going back from 65 to 50 is about -23%.

Percentage points are not the same as percent. A rate that goes from 4% to 5% rose by 1 percentage point, which is a 25% increase in the rate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a percentage of a number?

Divide the percent by 100 and multiply. 15% of 80 is 0.15 ร— 80, which is 12.

How do I calculate percent change?

Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. Going from 50 to 65 is a 30% increase.

How do I work out a sale price?

Multiply the price by one minus the discount. A $79.99 item at 25% off costs $79.99 ร— 0.75, which is $59.99.

Is 20% off and then 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. The second discount applies to the already reduced price, so you pay 80% ร— 90% = 72% of the original, which is 28% off.
