What to do next

How it works

With weighted categories, each score counts in proportion to its weight from the syllabus. A test worth 50% moves your grade five times as much as a quiz category worth 10%. With total points, every point counts the same, so a 100-point test matters twice as much as a 50-point quiz.

The letter grade uses the common scale: A 93 and up, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80, and so on down to D- at 60. The A B C D F option uses 90, 80, 70 and 60.

Things to keep in mind

Teachers round differently, and some drop the lowest quiz or curve a test. Your school's grade portal is the official grade.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each category score by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight. Homework 95 at 20%, quizzes 82 at 30% and a midterm 88 at 50% gives 19 + 24.6 + 44 = 87.6%.

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?

That usually means some work is not graded yet. The calculator divides by the weights you entered, which gives your grade on the work so far.

What letter grade is an 87%?

On the common plus and minus scale, 87% is a B+. 90% starts the A- range and 93% the A range. Your school may use other cutoffs.

How do I calculate a grade from points?

Add the points you earned and divide by the points possible. 45/50, 18/20 and 80/100 is 143 of 170, or 84.1%.
