What to do next

How it works

Tax is the rate times the subtotal, or the dollar figure from your receipt. The tip is a percent of the subtotal, or of the subtotal plus tax if you choose after tax. The total is divided by the number of people.

When people ordered different things, each person pays for their own items plus an even share of whatever is left on the subtotal. Tax and tip are then split in the same proportion as the food.

Things to keep in mind

Some receipts already include a gratuity or service charge, often for parties of 6 or more. If yours does, set the tip to 0 or only add what you want on top.

Sales tax on restaurant meals varies by state and city, from 0% in a few states to over 10% in some cities. Use the rate printed on the receipt when you have it.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

Etiquette guides usually say before tax, since tax is not part of the service. On a $142.50 bill with 8.875% tax, a 20% tip is $28.50 before tax or $31.03 after tax.

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 15% to 20% for table service is common, and many people now start at 18% to 20%. Check the receipt first, because some restaurants add a service charge for large groups.

How do we split the bill when someone ordered more?

Turn on the option to split by what each person ordered and list each person's own items. Shared plates are divided evenly, and tax and tip follow each person's share of the food.

Why do the shares add up to a few cents more than the total?

Each share is rounded up to the cent so the bill is fully covered. With 4 people and a $199.65 bill, each pays $49.92 and the extra 3 cents can go to the tip.
