How it works
The counter splits your text at spaces and line breaks and counts every piece that has at least one letter or number. Sentences end at a period, question mark or exclamation point, and paragraphs are separated by a blank line.
Reading time uses 238 words per minute for nonfiction and 260 for fiction, the averages from Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of English reading speed. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute.

Reading speed varies a lot from person to person and with how hard the text is. Treat the times as a guide, not a promise.
Schools and publishers sometimes have their own rules, such as whether titles, footnotes or references count. Check the instructions you were given.

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?
About 4 minutes 12 seconds at 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adult nonfiction in a 2019 review of 190 studies. Fiction reads a bit faster, at about 260 words per minute.
How many pages is 1,000 words?
Roughly 2 pages single spaced or 4 pages double spaced in 12-point font with 1-inch margins. Font, spacing and headings change this.
How many words is a 5-minute speech?
About 750 words at 150 words per minute, a common presenting pace. Use the speaking time calculator to try slower or faster speeds.
Why is my count different from Word or Google Docs?
Tools split words a little differently around dashes, slashes, numbers and links. The difference is usually one or two words.
