How it works
Sales tax is the price times the combined rate for where you buy. The combined rate is the state rate plus any local rates. The calculator uses each state's population-weighted local average by default, or your own local rate if you enter it.
The reverse mode takes a receipt total and backs out the tax by dividing by one plus the rate, which is handy for expense reports and for sellers who quote tax-inclusive prices.
Things to keep in mind
Rates are as of 2026-01-01. Local rates can change every quarter. Groceries and clothing follow state-specific rules, which the item type switch applies, but prepared food, vehicles and lodging usually have their own rates.
Exact rates by street address depend on district boundaries. Use your state revenue department's lookup when you need the precise figure.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the price by the rate. A $100 item at 8.25% has $8.25 of tax, for a total of $108.25. To go backward from a receipt total, divide by 1.0825.
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Alaska lets cities charge their own, averaging under 2%.
Which state has the highest sales tax?
Louisiana has the highest combined average at 10.113%. California has the highest state rate at 7.25%, and its local add-ons push some cities above 10%.
Why is my receipt different from the state average?
Local rates differ by city, county and special district. The state average is population weighted. Enter your own local rate for the exact amount.
Are groceries taxed?
Most states exempt groceries. A few tax them at a reduced rate, and a few tax them in full. Pick Groceries as the item type and the calculator applies your state's rule.
