Your instructor's instructions win

APA 7 and MLA 9 set defaults, but an instructor can ask for a running head, a page number, a word count or a different line order. Check the assignment sheet before you print.

How to use it

Pick APA or MLA, type the paper title and the lines your instructor wants under it, and print or download. For APA 7 student papers the page holds the title in bold, a blank line, then your name, the department and university, the course, the instructor and the due date, all centered. For MLA 9 the title is centered with your name, instructor, course and date under it.

Write the title the way it will appear in the paper. APA uses title case for the title; MLA does too. The due date prints as Month D, YYYY in both formats.

Things to watch

MLA does not require a separate title page unless the instructor asks for one. For a paper without one, put your name, the instructor, the course and the date at the top left of page one, then the centered title, and skip this page. APA student papers do not need a running head, but a professional paper does, and some instructors still want one.

Frequently asked questions

Does the APA title page need a page number?

Yes, the page number 1 goes at the top right of the title page. Add it in Word with Insert, Page Number, and it will continue through the paper. This page leaves it out so it does not clash with the number in your document.

What is the difference between a student and a professional APA title page?

A student page has the course, instructor and due date and no running head or author note. A professional page has a running head, the author note and affiliations without the course details. This template is the student version.

How do I add this to my paper?

Download the DOCX and paste your paper after it with a page break, or save the PDF and merge it in front of the paper's PDF.

Is what I type saved anywhere?

No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our server. If you refresh the page it is gone, so print, save a PDF or download the DOCX when you are done.
