Weighted GPA calculator

High school GPA with honors and AP bonus points, shown next to your unweighted GPA.

  • Honors +0.5, AP and IB +1.0 by default (school rules vary)

One per line: class name and letter grade, with credits after the name if they are not 1 (like Health 0.5 A). Put AP, IB or Honors in the name.

Some districts only weight a C- or better.

Example

Weighted GPA

3.90

Unweighted 3.40 on a 4.0 scale

Unweighted GPA
3.40
Weighting adds
+0.50

2 AP/IB, 1 honors, 2 regular

By class

AP Biology (AP/IB, 1 cr)A: 4.0 + 1 = 5.0
Honors English (Honors, 1 cr)B+: 3.3 + 0.5 = 3.8
Algebra II (Regular, 1 cr)A-: 3.7
Spanish II (Regular, 1 cr)B: 3.0
AP US History (AP/IB, 1 cr)B: 3.0 + 1 = 4.0
  • Weighting rules are set by each school district. Many add 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP, but some weight only AP, cap the bonus, or give none below a C.
  • Many colleges recalculate GPA with their own rules, often unweighted and with core classes only.

What to do next

How it works

Each letter grade gets its usual 4.0 points (A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3 and so on). Classes with AP, IB or dual enrollment in the name get the AP bonus, and classes with Honors or H get the honors bonus. Both GPAs are credit-weighted averages.

With the defaults, an A in AP Biology counts as 5.0, a B+ in Honors English as 3.8, and an A- in Algebra II as 3.7. An F never gets a bonus.

Things to keep in mind

Districts handle weighting differently. Forest Hills School District in Ohio, for example, uses a 4.5 scale for honors and a 5.0 scale for AP but gives no bonus to D grades. Turn on the C- option if your school works that way.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale for every class. Weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder classes, so an A in AP counts as 5.0 when AP gets +1.0.

How much do honors and AP classes add?

A common rule is +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP or IB, but it is set by each district. Change the bonus boxes to match your school's handbook.

Is a 4.2 weighted GPA good?

It means you took some advanced classes and did well, since 4.0 is the most you can get unweighted. Colleges look at the courses behind it too, and many recompute GPA their own way.

Do colleges use weighted or unweighted GPA?

It varies. Many recalculate an unweighted GPA from core academic classes so applicants from different schools can be compared.
