Blank areas, not ruled lines

The cue column, notes area and summary print as open boxes. Write on the page by hand, or type into the DOCX in Word; the cells grow as you type.

How to use it

Type your name, class, topic and date if you want them printed, pick one to three pages and print. Each page is the standard Cornell layout: a narrow cue column on the left for questions and key words, a wide notes area on the right, and a summary box across the bottom. Leave the fields empty to print a blank stack for a notebook.

During class, write in the notes column only. Within a day, read the notes and write a question or a key word in the cue column for each main idea, then write the summary in two to four sentences. To study, cover the notes and answer the cues.

Things to watch

Keep one topic per page so the summary stays honest; a page that covers two lectures gets two half summaries. If your teacher asks for a title on the page, leave the title line on. For a lab day, the lab report template holds the write-up and these pages hold the notes you took while listening.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get lined paper in the notes area?

No. The page prints open boxes without ruled lines, because the document renderer draws table cells, not rules. If you want lines, print the page on lined paper or type into the DOCX.

Why is the cue column narrow?

The Cornell system uses about 2.5 inches for cues and 6 inches for notes. Cues are a word or a question, not a sentence, so the narrow column keeps them short enough to quiz yourself with.

Does each page print on its own sheet?

Yes. The notes area is sized so one layout fills one Letter page. Pages 2 and 3 skip the info table at the top and give the notes area the extra room.

Is what I type saved anywhere?

No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our server. If you refresh the page it is gone, so print, save a PDF or download the DOCX when you are done.
