Your teacher's instructions come first

Teachers often ask for specific sections or a word count. If you were given a rubric, match its headings. The word counts shown here are a common range, not a rule.

1 / 1

How to use it

Fill in the book details at the top, then write one box per section: a short summary, the main characters, the setting, your favorite part and your opinion. Pick a star rating at the end or leave it blank to circle by hand. Each box becomes a heading and a paragraph on the page; empty boxes leave lines to write in after printing.

Keep the summary short and spend the words on your favorite part and your opinion. That is the part a teacher reads most closely. A line count shows under the preview when a section runs long.

Things to watch

Copying a summary from the internet counts as plagiarism at most schools. When you quote a sentence from the book, put it in quotation marks and add the page number.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a book report be?

For elementary grades, one page is typical. Middle school reports often run one to two pages. If your teacher gave a word count, follow that and ignore the suggested counts here.

Can I skip a section?

Leave the box empty and the heading prints with blank lines under it. If you do not want the heading at all, download the DOCX and delete it in Word.

What goes in the setting?

Where the story happens and when: the place, the time period and the season if it matters. One to three sentences is enough.

Is what I type saved anywhere?

No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our server. If you refresh the page it is gone, so print, save a PDF or download the DOCX when you are done.
