    What to do next

    How it works

Turn a video clip into an animated WebP, which is lighter than a GIF. Upload a video and it plays right away. Pause on the moment you want and click Set start here or Set end here, or drag the start and end sliders. A clip can be up to 15 seconds.

Choose a frame rate of 5, 10 or 15 frames per second, and a width of 320, 480 or 640px, or keep the original (up to 800px). Looping can be infinite or play once. Click Make WebP to see the progress, then preview and save the result.

    Things to know

Each frame is encoded with the browser's WebP encoder and then combined into one animated file. Safari cannot encode WebP, so Safari users are pointed to the GIF tool instead. Older programs and some forums do not accept WebP uploads.

The result is capped at 150 frames. A 15-second clip at 15fps would be 225 frames, so the tool widens the gap between frames to fit 150 and tells you. Tall vertical videos may get a narrower width because of the per-frame size limit.

Videos the browser cannot play directly, such as AVI, MKV and some HEVC files, are first converted to a preview MP4 with the video engine (about 31MB, downloaded once). The preview is at most 800px wide and has no audio, and the GIF frames are taken from it. For videos longer than 90 seconds, you choose a starting point first and the tool converts 1 minute from there (30 seconds for large videos such as 4K). To reach another part, click Preview another part.

    Frequently asked questions

    Why choose WebP over GIF?

For the same clip, a WebP is usually far smaller than a GIF, and it is not limited to 256 colors, so gradients look natural. Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox and most current apps display it, but older programs and some forums do not accept WebP uploads. Make a GIF for those.

How do I make the WebP smaller?

Lower the frame rate to 10 or less, set the width to 480px or less, and keep the clip short. Switching the quality level to Light makes it smaller still.

    Does it include the audio?

No. WebP is an image format, so the audio is dropped. If you need the audio, save it separately with Extract audio from video.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The video is played and processed only in this browser and never sent over the network. When the video engine is downloaded, only the engine comes down; your video does not go up. Nothing remains once you close the tab.
