    What to do next

    How it works

Pick a few seconds from an MKV video and turn it into a GIF. Upload a video and it plays right away. Pause on the moment you want and click Set start here or Set end here, or drag the start and end sliders. A clip can be up to 15 seconds.

Choose a frame rate of 5, 10 or 15 frames per second, and a width of 320, 480 or 640px, or keep the original (up to 800px). Looping can be infinite or play once. Click Make GIF to see the progress, then preview and save the result.

    Things to know

A GIF can use at most 256 colors per frame, so videos with lots of gradients may show banding. If color matters, animated WebP looks more natural.

The result is capped at 150 frames. A 15-second clip at 15fps would be 225 frames, so the tool widens the gap between frames to fit 150 and tells you. Tall vertical videos may get a narrower width because of the per-frame size limit.

Videos the browser cannot play directly, such as AVI, MKV and some HEVC files, are first converted to a preview MP4 with the video engine (about 31MB, downloaded once). The preview is at most 800px wide and has no audio, and the GIF frames are taken from it. For videos longer than 90 seconds, you choose a starting point first and the tool converts 1 minute from there (30 seconds for large videos such as 4K). To reach another part, click Preview another part.

    Frequently asked questions

Why does an MKV take time to prepare instead of opening right away?

MKV is a container that can hold many codecs. Safari cannot open it at all, and Chrome depends on what is inside. If Chrome can play it, the tool uses it as is. If not, the video engine (about 31MB, downloaded once) makes a preview MP4. A 1-minute preview usually takes tens of seconds on a computer.

How do I make the GIF smaller?

GIF size scales with frame count times frame size. Drop the frame rate to 10 or 5, set the width to 480px or 320px, and keep the clip short. If the result goes over 10MB, the page shows you what to reduce.

    Does it include the audio?

No. GIF is an image format, so the audio is dropped. If you need the audio, save it separately with Extract audio from video.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The video is played and processed only in this browser and never sent over the network. When the video engine is downloaded, only the engine comes down; your video does not go up. Nothing remains once you close the tab.

Why is it slow? Does it work on a phone?

The video is not sent to a server. Your device makes the preview itself, so the time depends on its speed. It works on a phone but much more slowly, and it can stop if the screen turns off or you switch apps. For long videos, use a computer.
