How it works
Each state defines taxable income its own way. Most start from federal adjusted gross income, subtract a state standard deduction and personal exemptions, and apply flat or graduated rates. A few start from federal taxable income, and a few use their own definitions. The calculator follows each state's structure and shows the steps.
The comparison table runs the same income through several states so you can see the spread, which ranges from zero to double-digit rates at high incomes.
Things to keep in mind
Rates and amounts are for tax year 2026 where states have published them, verified against state revenue departments on 2026-10-19. Where a state had not yet released 2026 figures, the note under the result says so.
Local income taxes, itemized deductions, retirement income exclusions and state credits are not included. For a filing-ready number, use your state's own forms.

Frequently asked questions
Which states have no income tax?
Alaska, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming. New Hampshire ended its tax on interest and dividends, and Washington taxes only long-term capital gains above a high threshold.
Which state has the highest income tax?
California, with a top rate of 13.3%. The top rate only applies to income above the last bracket line, so most people pay far less.
Is state income tax deductible on my federal return?
Only if you itemize, and the state and local tax deduction is capped. Most people take the standard deduction and get no federal benefit from state tax paid.
Why does the calculator use the standard deduction?
It is what most filers take, and it keeps the estimate honest without knowing your itemized amounts. If you itemize on your state return, your tax will be lower than shown.
