|---|---|
| Federal income tax (7.8%) | โ$4,060.16 |
| Social Security and Medicare | โ$3,978.00 |
| California income tax (2.2%) | โ$1,159.53 |
| State payroll deductions | โ$676.00 |

- Federal withholding follows IRS Publication 15-T for a 2020 or later W-4. State tax is a yearly estimate from your state's brackets divided by pay periods, so it can differ by a few dollars from the withholding table your employer uses.
- Social Security stops after $184,500 of wages in 2026. The calculator spreads that evenly across the year, while your real paychecks grow once you cross the cap.

What to do next
How it works
Gross pay is your rate times your hours, with overtime at time and a half. The calculator then applies federal withholding for your W-4, Social Security, Medicare and your state's income tax, and shows the net amount per paycheck and per year.
Things to keep in mind
Federal law requires overtime after 40 hours in a week. California, Alaska, Nevada and Colorado also require it after a set number of hours in a day. Enter the overtime hours your employer actually pays.
Tips, shift differentials and bonuses are taxable wages. Add them to your hourly total or use the bonus calculator for a separate payment.

Frequently asked questions
How is an hourly paycheck calculated?
Hours times rate, plus overtime hours at 1.5 times the rate, gives gross pay for the week. Multiplying by 52 and dividing by the number of pay periods gives the paycheck. Taxes and deductions then come off.
How much is $20 an hour after taxes?
At 40 hours a week in a state with no income tax, about $680 to $700 of an $800 weekly check reaches you, depending on your W-4. In a state with income tax, expect $30 to $60 less.
Is overtime taxed more?
No. Overtime is taxed at the same rates as regular pay. A bigger check can be withheld at a higher rate for that period because the table annualizes it, but the extra comes back on your return. For 2025 through 2028 there is also a federal deduction for the overtime premium.
What if my hours change every week?
Use an average, or run the calculator for your lightest and heaviest weeks to see the range. Withholding follows each check, so a short week has less tax taken out.
