What to do next

How it works

Each day is read as one or more start and end times. The unpaid break is subtracted from every day that has a shift. The seven days are added into a weekly total, shown in hours and minutes and in decimal hours.

If you add an hourly rate, pay is split into regular time and overtime. Overtime uses the federal rule of 1.5 times the rate for hours over 40 in the week.

Things to keep in mind

Times are read in 12-hour or 24-hour form. When you type 9-5 without AM or PM, the calculator assumes a daytime shift. Write 9pm-5am for a night shift.

Paid breaks should not be subtracted. Federal rules treat short breaks of up to about 20 minutes as paid time, and a meal break is unpaid only if you are fully relieved of duty.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter a lunch break?

Put the unpaid break in minutes in the break field. It comes off every day that has hours. If your break differs by day, enter the shifts as split segments instead, like 8-12, 12:30-5.

Does it handle overnight shifts?

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift is counted as running into the next day. 10pm to 6am is 8 hours.

When is overtime owed?

Under federal law, after 40 hours in a workweek, at 1.5 times the regular rate. Some states add daily rules. California pays 1.5ร— after 8 hours in a day and 2ร— after 12.

Can I copy the result into my timesheet?

Yes. The result text lists each day with decimal hours, and the copy button puts it on your clipboard.
