How to use it

Fill in the header: who it goes to, who it is from with your department, the date, anyone copied, and a subject line that states the point. The body goes in one box; press Enter twice for a new paragraph. Lead with the decision or the news, then the details, then where to find more.

If you need people to do something, type it in Action requested and pick a deadline. They print as a two-row table under the body so nobody has to hunt for the ask.

Things to watch

A memo has no salutation and no signature block; the From line does that job. Keep it to one page, and if the subject is sensitive for one person, write them a letter or talk to them instead of copying a group.

Frequently asked questions

Memo or email?

Email for routine notes. A memo is for something you want on file: a policy change, a deadline for several teams, a decision people will refer back to. Many teams attach the memo PDF to an email.

Do I sign a memo?

No. Some writers put their initials next to their name on the From line of the printed copy, but a signature block is not used.

What goes in CC?

People who need to know but are not expected to act, such as a manager or Finance. Leave it empty and the row disappears.

Is what I type saved anywhere?

No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our server. If you refresh the page it is gone, so print, save a PDF or download the DOCX when you are done.
