One item per line: city and state, phone and email, a link.

The head of the team if you can find it. Empty gives Dear Hiring Manager:

Start with the company name so it prints above the street.

Lower case, as in the growth marketing team. Printed in the RE line.

Finish the sentence I am currently ...

One paragraph. Something true of this company alone: a product, a decision, a number you noticed.

One paragraph. One or two results with numbers, and how they apply to this team.

Ask for a conversation, not a job

This is a general template, not legal advice. There is no posting, so the realistic ask is twenty minutes of someone's time. The letter is written that way. Send it to the head of the team you want to join rather than a general careers address, and attach your resume.

1 / 1

How to use it

Type the company, the team you have in mind in lower case, and one phrase about who you are. Then two paragraphs in your own words: why this company, with something specific you noticed about it, and what you bring, with one or two results and numbers. The letter opens by saying you know nothing is posted, puts the team in a RE line, and ends by asking for a short informational conversation.

Address it to the person who runs the team if you can find a name; a general careers inbox rarely answers letters without a posting. Save as PDF and send it with your resume.

Things to watch

Keep the two paragraphs short; the word counts in the labels are a guide. Do not ask for a job or a salary, and do not say you will follow up with a call unless you will. If a matching posting appears while you wait, apply through it with the cover letter template on this site and mention this letter in the first line.

Frequently asked questions

Letter of interest or letter of intent?

Interest when no job is posted and you want to introduce yourself to a team. Intent when you are pointing at a specific role, posted or expected, and want to state that you intend to pursue it. Both are on this site; the letter of intent template has a reasons paragraph instead of the two free paragraphs here.

Who should I send it to?

The head of the team or department you want to join, found on the company site or LinkedIn. Copy the recruiter only if you already know one there. A letter to a general address is usually filed and forgotten.

How long should I wait before following up?

About two weeks. One short email that restates your interest and thanks them is enough. If there is still no answer, keep the contact for later and move on.

Is what I type saved anywhere?

No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our server. If you refresh the page it is gone, so print, save a PDF or download the DOCX when you are done.
