One page, written for this employer

This is a general template, not legal advice. A letter of intent is read as a signal of real interest, so every reason needs to be true of this company and this role. Keep it to one page and attach your resume.

1 / 1

How to use it

Type the company and the role, how you heard about it, and one phrase about who you are. Then three reasons you are a fit, one per line: experience that matches the work, one result with a number, and something about how the team works that fits you. The letter writes them as one paragraph with First, Second, Third, puts the role in a RE line above the salutation, and asks for a conversation at the end.

Leave the recipient name empty if you do not have one and the letter opens with Dear Hiring Manager. Save as PDF and send it with your resume; the resume template on this site uses the same contact layout.

Things to watch

Do not restate the resume. Pick the three things that matter most to this employer and leave the rest for the interview. If you are answering a specific posting with an application form, use the cover letter template instead; a letter of intent is for when you are approaching the company on your own.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a cover letter?

A cover letter answers a posting and goes with an application. A letter of intent is sent on your own initiative: before a posting exists, after a referral, when you are relocating, or when a company says it is growing. It names the kind of role you want and why you fit, and asks for a conversation.

Should I say I am applying to other companies?

No. The letter is about this company. If you have a deadline from another offer, mention it in the conversation you are asking for, not in the letter.

Do I need a RE line?

It helps. Recruiters file letters by role, and the RE line tells them in one glance what you are writing about. If you are writing about a kind of role rather than a posted one, type that, for example Growth marketing roles.

Is what I type saved anywhere?

No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our server. If you refresh the page it is gone, so print, save a PDF or download the DOCX when you are done.
