Use your district's template when there is one

Many districts and teacher prep programs require their own lesson plan format for observations and evaluations. This page follows the common objectives, standards, materials, procedure, assessment and differentiation outline, so the content moves over easily.

1 / 1

How to use it

Write the objectives as things students will be able to do, one per line, and paste the standard code they map to. The procedure goes in one line per step with four pieces separated by a vertical bar: minutes, the activity name, what you do and what students do. The minutes add up at the bottom of the table, and a note under the preview tells you when the total does not match the class period.

Differentiation is where observers look first, so name the support for students who struggle, the extension for students who finish early, and any accommodations from IEPs or 504 plans.

Things to watch

This is a single-lesson plan. A unit plan, a plan for a formal observation or a student teaching plan often needs more, such as prior knowledge, vocabulary and a reflection section. Add those headings in the DOCX if your program asks for them.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I put the lesson title?

In the subject box, after the subject: 'Math: Equivalent fractions'. It prints under the Lesson Plan title and in the file name.

Can a procedure step have two lines?

Each line is one row. For a long step, add a second row with the same activity name and split the minutes between them.

What if the minutes do not add up to the period?

The note under the preview is only a reminder. Transitions and attendance often take a few minutes, so some teachers plan for 45 minutes of a 50 minute period on purpose.

Is what I type saved anywhere?

No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our server. If you refresh the page it is gone, so print, save a PDF or download the DOCX when you are done.
