One short email, then wait

Send it a few days after the date they gave you, or about a week after the interview if no date was given. Keep it to a few lines, send it once, and continue your search while you wait.

1 / 1

How to use it

Type the role, the interview date and today's date, and the email says how many days have passed. If the interviewer gave you a timeline, type it the way it fits after a decision was expected, for example by the end of last week, and the email refers to it. The text stays to six lines: greeting, when you interviewed, a polite question about the timeline, an offer to send more, sign-off and your name.

Copy the subject line into the subject box and the rest into the body. Send it to the recruiter or whoever set up the interview; they are most likely to know where things stand.

Things to watch

Do not ask why you have not heard back or mention other offers unless you have one with a deadline. If you do have a deadline, add one sentence with the date. The warning under the preview tells you when it is too early to send.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no address or date?

This is written as an email, not a mailed letter. Copy the subject line into the subject box and the rest into the body of your email. If you need a printed letter, use the letter version of the same template.

How long should I wait before following up?

A few days after the date they said they would be in touch. If no date was given, about a week after the interview. Hiring often slips because of other candidates, approvals or vacations, not because of you.

What if I already sent a thank-you email?

That was the right first step, and this is the second. The thank-you goes out within a day of the interview; this one goes out when the timeline has passed. Use the thank-you email template on this site for the first one.

Is what I type saved anywhere?

No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our server. If you refresh the page it is gone, so print, save a PDF or download the DOCX when you are done.
