No passwords in the document

A handover document is read by several people and kept for a long time. List which accounts need to move, but reset or transfer the credentials in person. If you are leaving the company, follow any handover steps in your offer letter or handbook.

How to use it

The document should let the incoming person keep the work moving without calling you. For each task, write where it stands, where the files live (a path like Shared drive > Operations > Supplies saves searching) and who the outside contact is. List every account that needs a new owner, with what to do, but never the password.

Open items are the unfinished things with a next step and a date. Things to know are the deadlines and the mistakes people make in this job. Walk through the tables together before anyone signs.

Things to watch

Keep personal phone numbers and personal email addresses out of it; use work contacts. If your employer has an offboarding checklist, this document goes alongside it, not instead of it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the manager have to sign?

No, but a manager who knows the work and signs the sheet makes it clear later what was handed over and what was not.

I have more tasks than fit on a page.

The table takes up to 30 rows and the header repeats on each page. Keep step-by-step procedures in a separate document and point to it in the Where to find it column.

How many sign-off boxes do I need?

Match your company's approval chain. A small team often uses one box for the manager. Larger companies add Reviewed by and Approved by. Pick None if approvals happen by email and you only need the body of the form.

Is what I type saved anywhere?

No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our server. If you refresh the page it is gone, so print, save a PDF or download the DOCX when you are done.
