RE: Application for Growth Marketing Manager
Dear Taylor Kim:
I am writing to apply for the Growth Marketing Manager position at Northwind Commerce, which I found on your careers page. Your team builds tools for small online sellers, which is the market I have worked in for the past four years, and I would like to bring that experience to a company growing in it.
At Acme Inc. I redesigned our sign-up flow from five steps to three, which raised completion by 14 percentage points, and I launched a referral program that brought in 12,000 new members in six months at an acquisition cost 18 percent below paid channels. I work closely with product and design, and I am used to turning weekly data into a decision by Monday morning. Those are the habits your posting asks for.
Thank you for considering my application. I would welcome the chance to talk about how I can help Northwind grow its seller community, and I am available for an interview at your convenience.
Sincerely,
ย

How to use it
Your name, the date and your contact block go at the top, then the hiring manager's name, title and company. If you do not know the name, leave it empty and the letter opens with Dear Hiring Manager. The position you type becomes a RE: line so a recruiter can file it.
Three boxes, three paragraphs. First: the job you are applying for, where you saw it and one reason this company. Second: one or two results with numbers that match the posting. Third: thanks and that you are available to talk. The word counts in the labels are guides, not limits.
Things to watch
Do not repeat the resume; pick one story and tell it. A letter that only swaps the company name is easy to spot, so the first paragraph needs a line that is true of this employer alone. Save as PDF unless the posting asks for a Word file.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a cover letter at all?
When the posting asks for one, yes. When it is optional, a short one still helps if you are changing fields, have a gap, or know someone at the company. Keep it under one page either way.
Dear Hiring Manager or To whom it may concern?
Dear Hiring Manager. To whom it may concern reads as a form letter. Better still, find the manager's name on the posting or LinkedIn and use it with a colon: Dear Ms. Kim:
Should the letter match my resume?
Use the same name, phone and email on both, and the same font family if you can. The resume template on this site uses the same contact layout.
Is what I type saved anywhere?
No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our server. If you refresh the page it is gone, so print, save a PDF or download the DOCX when you are done.
