    What to do next

    How it works

Add an Excel file and click Convert. The header row is used for the element names and the XML is saved as UTF-8 with two-space indentation.

For a sheet without a header, turn off First row is a header and the columns are named Column1, Column2 and so on.

    Things to know

Characters such as & < > are escaped according to XML rules. Formulas are written as their calculated values and dates as year-month-day. Formatting and merged cells are not carried over.

    Frequently asked questions

What does the XML look like?

Each row becomes one <row> element and the header cells become the element names, for example <rows><row><name>Jane Doe</name><age>30</age></row>...</rows>. The root and row element names can be changed.

What if a header has spaces or special characters?

Characters not allowed in XML names are replaced with _, and a name that starts with a digit gets a leading _. A column starting with @ becomes an attribute, and a dotted column like address.city becomes a nested element.

Do my files get uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs inside this browser tab and the files never leave your device. The results disappear when you close the page, so save what you need.
