- Enter days in order within one workweek. Alternative workweek schedules (4 ร 10) approved by employee vote change the daily threshold and are not modeled.
- Only the premium on hours over 40 in the week counts for the federal overtime deduction; California's daily and double-time premiums do not.

What to do next
How it works
Each day is split at 8 and 12 hours: up to 8 regular, 8 to 12 at 1.5ร, over 12 at 2ร. If you worked all seven days, the seventh day uses the seventh-day rule. Then the regular hours are checked against the 40-hour week, and anything over 40 moves to 1.5ร.
Things to keep in mind
The regular rate includes nondiscretionary bonuses and shift differentials. California also counts the hours used to compute the regular rate differently from federal law, which matters for salaried non-exempt workers.
Alaska pays 1.5ร after 8 hours a day, Nevada after 8 hours for lower-wage workers, and Colorado after 12 hours or 12 consecutive hours. Those rules are not in this calculator.

Frequently asked questions
What are California's overtime rules?
Time and a half after 8 hours in a workday and after 40 hours in a workweek, double time after 12 hours in a day. On the seventh consecutive day of work in a workweek, the first 8 hours are time and a half and anything over 8 is double time.
Do daily and weekly overtime stack?
No. Hours already paid as daily overtime are not counted again toward the 40-hour weekly limit. The calculator removes them before checking the weekly rule.
What is the seventh-day rule?
If you work all seven days of your employer's workweek, the seventh day pays 1.5ร for the first 8 hours and 2ร beyond that, even if the day is short.
Does a 4-day, 10-hour schedule trigger overtime?
Not if the employer adopted an alternative workweek schedule by a two-thirds employee vote and filed it with the state. Without that, hours 9 and 10 each day are overtime.
Who is exempt in California?
Executive, administrative and professional employees who earn at least twice the state minimum wage for full-time work and meet the duties test, plus some outside sales and computer professionals.
