Not the marriage license

This page is a keepsake and a reading copy. The legal part of a US wedding is the marriage license from the county clerk, signed by the officiant and filed after the ceremony. Check your county's rules on timing and witnesses.

How to use it

Each of you gets the same three boxes. What I love about you: two or three specific things, the small ones work best. What I promise: three to five promises, one per line, each starting with I promise or I will. Closing line: one sentence to end on. The sample lines show the shape; replace every one of them with your own.

Write separately, then compare length and tone before the day. Read yours out loud with a timer: one to two minutes each is what guests and officiants expect. Print two copies in a large font, one for each of you, and give a third to the officiant.

Things to watch

Inside jokes that only one person gets, past relationships and anything you would not want your grandmother to hear belong in a private note, not the vows. Keep the promises ones you mean; this is the one page from the day you are likely to read again.

Frequently asked questions

How long should wedding vows be?

About one to two minutes each when read aloud, roughly 150 to 250 words. The warning under the preview tells you when a set runs long.

Do we have to share them before the ceremony?

Many couples keep them secret from each other but have the officiant or a friend read both sets to check they are similar in length and tone. That avoids one person reading a paragraph and the other a page.

Can we use this for a vow renewal?

Yes. Change the heading names if you like, put the renewal date in the date box and the place where you are renewing them.

Is what I type saved anywhere?

No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our server. If you refresh the page it is gone, so print, save a PDF or download the DOCX when you are done.
