Issue it only for money actually received
A receipt is proof that a payment was received. Write the date the money changed hands and the real amount. For a partial payment, show the total owed and the balance so both sides know what is left.

How to use it
Type the receipt number, the date, who paid and how much. Say what the payment was for in one line, such as the order number or the service, and pick how it was paid. For a check, type the check number and it prints next to the check box.
If the payment covers only part of a bill, type the total owed. The receipt then shows the total, this payment and the balance due on one line, and the amount block reads Partial payment.
Things to watch
The receipt prints on the top half of a Letter page, so you can cut the sheet and keep the lower half for your own copy. Sign the printed copy before you hand it over.
Keep one running series of receipt numbers. If you void a receipt, keep the number and write void rather than reusing it.

Frequently asked questions
Does a receipt need sales tax on it?
Not this one. It records the total amount received. If you need an itemized document with tax, use the invoice template and mark it paid.
Who signs it?
The person who took the money signs as Received by. The payer keeps the receipt as proof of payment.
Can I use it for rent or a deposit?
Yes. Write what the payment is for, such as the month and address for rent, and use the total owed box if the payment is partial so the balance shows.
Is what I type saved anywhere?
No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our server. If you refresh the page it is gone, so print, save a PDF or download the DOCX when you are done.
