Paper or spreadsheet
The printed page is for the checkbook. The Excel file keeps the running balance for you and has a cleared column, so use it when you reconcile against the statement each month.

Balance = previous balance - payment + deposit. Tick the check number when the item appears on your bank statement.
How to use it
Type the account name, the starting balance and the date it was taken from. The printed page has a row for the starting balance and 25 or 40 ruled rows with check number, date, payee, payment, deposit and balance. Write each transaction on its own line and carry the balance down. Print as many pages as you need.
The Excel version does the arithmetic: a running balance formula, a Cleared dropdown for each row and a reconciliation block that compares the cleared balance with the statement. Use the printed page in the checkbook and the spreadsheet at month end.
Things to watch
Record card payments, ATM withdrawals and automatic payments too, not only checks; those are what make a register drift from the bank. When you reconcile, mark each item that appears on the statement as cleared, then type the statement ending balance. A difference means an item is missing or was written down wrong. The bank reconciliation template walks through the full comparison.

Frequently asked questions
How do I start the register from a real balance?
Use the ending balance of your last bank statement as the starting balance and the statement date as the start date, then add every transaction since that date. From there the register and the bank should stay in step.
What goes in the Cleared column?
Yes once the transaction appears on a bank statement, No until then. In the Excel file the cleared balance adds up only the Yes rows, which is the number to compare with the statement.
Does the Excel file work in Google Sheets?
Yes. SUM, SUMIF, IF, AND and ROUND work the same in Google Sheets. You may need to re-create the Cleared dropdown.
Is what I type saved anywhere?
No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our server. If you refresh the page it is gone, so print, save a PDF or download the DOCX when you are done.
