How to use it

Type your name and address, the person who will act for you, and pick what they may do. Add the details the reader needs to match the request: the tracking number, the account, the child's name and school, the meeting. Set the dates so the letter cannot be used later, and say what it does not cover. The letter prints with an RE line, the paragraphs above, your signature and, if you turn it on, a witness line.

Sign the printed letter in ink. Give the signed original to the person you are authorizing along with a copy of your photo ID, because most counters will ask for both.

Things to watch

Keep the scope narrow and the dates short. A letter that says "handle all my affairs" with no end date is close to a power of attorney, and banks will not accept it as one. For anything that involves money, signing contracts or medical decisions, ask the organization which form it requires; many have their own.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as a power of attorney?

No. An authorization letter covers one task for a short time, such as picking up a package or attending a meeting. A power of attorney is a legal document, often notarized, that lets someone sign and act for you more broadly. If you need that, use a state power of attorney form.

Does it need to be notarized?

Usually not for a pickup or a school matter. Some banks and government offices want a notarized letter or their own form, so call ahead. The witness line is a lighter option that many offices accept.

What should the authorized person bring?

The signed letter, their own photo ID and a copy of yours. If the letter is about a package, also the tracking number or notice slip. If it is about an account, the account number.

Is what I type saved anywhere?

No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our server. If you refresh the page it is gone, so print, save a PDF or download the DOCX when you are done.
