  • An estimate. Real earnings swing with where viewers live, how many views show ads, video length and the season (ad rates usually peak in the fourth quarter). Your own RPM is in YouTube Studio under Analytics, Revenue.
  • RPM is already after YouTube's share, so the 55% and 45% splits are not applied again.
  • You need to be in the YouTube Partner Program to earn ad revenue: 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days.
  • Memberships, Super Chat, sponsorships and taxes are not included. YouTube income is self-employment income for U.S. creators.

What to do next

How it works

Earnings are views divided by 1,000, times the rate. RPM already reflects your share, so it is used as is. If you enter CPM, the calculator applies 55% for long-form and 45% for Shorts. Daily views are turned into monthly views with 365 days divided by 12.

Enter a low and a high rate to get a range. RPM moves a lot from month to month, so a range is more honest than one number.

Things to keep in mind

Finance, business and tech channels with U.S. viewers tend to see much higher rates than gaming or kids content. Shorts earn far less per view than long-form videos.

Ad revenue is only part of the picture. Sponsorships, affiliate links, memberships and merch are often bigger for mid-size channels, and none of them are counted here.

Frequently asked questions

How much does YouTube pay per 1,000 views?

It depends on your RPM, which varies by channel. At a $4 RPM, 100,000 views earn about $400. Your real RPM is in YouTube Studio under Analytics, Revenue.

What share of ad revenue do creators get?

YouTube Help says partners get 55% of net ad revenue on long-form videos and 45% of the revenue allocated to them from the Shorts creator pool.

What is the difference between RPM and CPM?

CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions, before YouTube's share. RPM is what you earn per 1,000 views after the share, so it is usually lower.

How many views do I need to make money on YouTube?

First you need to join the Partner Program: 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. After that, earnings scale with views and RPM.
