Show the math
Total put in$10,000.00 + $50.00 costs = $10,050.00
Total got back$13,500.00 + $400.00 income = $13,900.00
ROI($13,900.00 - $10,050.00) รท $10,050.00 = 38.308%
Annualized(1 + 38.308%)^(1 รท 3) - 1 = 11.417%

What to do next

How it works

Total put in is the amount invested plus extra costs. Total got back is the sale value plus any income received. ROI is the net gain divided by total put in.

When you enter the years held, the annualized ROI is (1 + ROI)^(1 รท years) - 1, the same as CAGR on those two totals.

Things to keep in mind

Simple ROI ignores when the money moved. If you added money in stages, the true yearly return will differ. Taxes on the gain are not included.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate ROI?

ROI = (what you got back - what you put in) รท what you put in. Putting in $1,000 and getting back $1,500 is a 50% ROI.

What is annualized ROI?

It spreads the total return evenly over each year with compounding. A 21% total return over 2 years is 10% a year, since 1.1 ร— 1.1 = 1.21.

Should I include dividends and fees?

Yes. Dividends, interest and rent belong in the money you got back, and commissions or repair costs belong in what you put in. Leaving them out makes ROI look better or worse than it was.

What is a good ROI?

It depends on the risk and the time. Compare the annualized number against a safe option, such as a CD or Treasury bill yield, for the same period.
