What to do next
How it works
Every number is stored as an exact fraction with whole-number top and bottom, so there is no rounding. Addition and subtraction use the least common denominator. Multiplication multiplies straight across, and division multiplies by the flipped second fraction.
The answer is reduced by the greatest common factor of the numerator and denominator. You also get the mixed number, the decimal and the percent. Repeating decimals show the repeating part in parentheses, so 1/6 is 0.1(6).
Things to keep in mind
Negative mixed numbers like -1 1/2 mean -(1 + 1/2), which is -3/2. Use the minus sign in front of the whole number.
Frequently asked questions
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Rewrite both over the least common denominator, then add the numerators. For 2/3 + 3/4 the LCD is 12, so it becomes 8/12 + 9/12 = 17/12, or 1 5/12.
How do you divide fractions?
Flip the second fraction and multiply. 1/2 รท 1/4 is 1/2 ร 4/1 = 4/2, which simplifies to 2.
How do I enter a mixed number?
Type the whole number, a space, then the fraction, like 1 2/3. The calculator turns it into 5/3 before it does the math.
How do I turn a decimal into a fraction?
Pick Simplify or convert and type the decimal. 0.375 is 375/1000, which reduces to 3/8.
