  • Whether something floats depends on its average density. A hollow steel boat floats even though steel is almost 8 times denser than water.
  • Material values are typical figures for pure substances. Alloys, temperature and purity change them a little.

What to do next

How it works

The calculator turns your mass into grams and your volume into cubic centimeters, then uses density = mass ÷ volume. Pick Mass or Volume above to solve for the other two ways: mass = density × volume, and volume = mass ÷ density.

Unit factors are exact: 1 lb is 453.59237 g, 1 cubic inch is 16.387064 cm³ and 1 US gallon is 231 cubic inches. One g/cm³ equals 62.428 lb/ft³ and 1,000 kg/m³.

Things to keep in mind

Density changes with temperature, especially for liquids and gases. The material list uses room temperature values from the CRC Handbook, with water at 68 °F (0.998 g/cm³).

Frequently asked questions

What is the density formula?

Density = mass ÷ volume. A 270 g block that takes up 100 cm³ has a density of 2.7 g/cm³, which is aluminum.

How do I convert g/cm³ to lb/ft³?

Multiply by about 62.43. Water at 1 g/cm³ is about 62.4 lb/ft³, and steel at 7.85 g/cm³ is about 490 lb/ft³.

How do I find mass from density and volume?

Multiply them. A cubic foot of water (62.3 lb/ft³ at room temperature) weighs about 62.3 lb.

Will my object float?

If its average density is lower than water (about 1 g/cm³ or 62.3 lb/ft³), it floats. Ice at 0.917 g/cm³ floats with about 92% under the surface.
