TB to GB
1,000 GB
1 TB = 1,000 GB
- 1 TB
- 1,000 GB
- 1 GB
- 0.001 TB
- KB, MB, GB mean
- 1 KB = 1,000 bytes (decimal)
Pick 1,024 to match what Windows shows. KiB, MiB and GiB always use 1,024.

Decimal and binary side by side
| Both decimal (drive makers, macOS) | 1,000 GB |
|---|---|
| Both binary (Windows, RAM) | 1,024 GB |
| A 1 TB drive as Windows shows it | 931.3225746 GB |
- Drive makers count 1 GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes. Windows counts in powers of 1,024, which is why a 1 TB drive shows up as about 931 GB. KiB, MiB and GiB always mean powers of 1,024.
Show the math

What to do next
How it works
Everything goes through bytes. With the decimal setting, each step from KB to PB is 1,000 times bigger. With the binary setting, each step is 1,024 times bigger. KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB and PiB are IEC binary prefixes and always mean powers of 1,024.
Things to keep in mind
Formatted drives also lose a little space to the file system, so the free space you see can be a bit lower than the converted number.

Frequently asked questions
Is 1 GB 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB?
Both are in use. Drive makers and macOS say 1,000 MB. Windows and RAM sizes use 1,024. The binary version has its own name, the gibibyte (GiB).
Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?
The drive holds 10^12 bytes. Windows divides by 1,024 three times and gets 931.3 GB. Nothing is missing.
How many bits are in a byte?
8. Internet speeds are given in megabits per second, so 100 Mbps moves about 12.5 megabytes per second.
