Daily calories by activity level (BMR ร— multiplier)

Sedentary (desk job, little exercise), ร— 1.22,055 calories
Light (exercise 1 to 3 days a week), ร— 1.3752,354 calories
Moderate (exercise 3 to 5 days a week), ร— 1.552,654 calories
Very active (hard exercise 6 to 7 days a week), ร— 1.7252,954 calories
Extra active (physical job or training twice a day), ร— 1.93,253 calories
  • BMR is what your body burns lying still for a day. Your total daily burn is higher; use the activity table or the TDEE calculator.
  • Formulas predict the average for people like you. Individual results commonly differ by 10% or more.
  • This is an estimate for general information, not medical advice. Talk to a doctor or registered dietitian before a big change in diet or exercise, especially if you are pregnant or have a health condition.

What to do next

How it works

Mifflin-St Jeor uses weight in kilograms, height in centimeters and age: 10 ร— weight + 6.25 ร— height - 5 ร— age, plus 5 for men or minus 161 for women. The calculator converts pounds and inches first.

The revised Harris-Benedict equation (Roza and Shizgal, 1984) is shown for comparison. If you enter body fat, Katch-McArdle uses lean mass only: 370 + 21.6 ร— lean mass in kg.

Things to keep in mind

These formulas were built from groups of healthy adults. Your own number can be 10% higher or lower, and it can shift with illness, medication, pregnancy or big changes in muscle mass.

The activity multipliers in the table (1.2 to 1.9) are the ones most calculators use. They are a convention, not a measured value for you. This page is general information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is BMR?

Basal metabolic rate is the energy your body uses at complete rest to keep you alive: breathing, circulation, organs. For most adults it is 1,200 to 2,000 calories a day.

Which BMR formula is most accurate?

Mifflin-St Jeor is the usual default because it came closest to measured values in later comparisons. Katch-McArdle can be better for lean, muscular people if you know your body fat.

What is the BMR of a 35-year-old man who is 5 ft 10 in and 170 lb?

Mifflin-St Jeor gives about 1,712 calories a day. With moderate exercise (ร— 1.55) that is about 2,654 calories a day.

Should I eat less than my BMR to lose weight?

Most people do not need to. Diet plans usually cut from total daily burn (TDEE), not from BMR. Very low calorie diets should be supervised by a doctor.
